Shirra’s former home stars with a high five

ABBOTSFORD has received the highest tourism accolade as a five-star ‘Historic House’ from VisitScotland, based on the quality of the experience being offered, writes Adam Drummond.

Following an extensive programme of restoration and refurbishment, Sir Walter Scott’s former home reopened earlier this year.

Beverley Rutherford, head of communications, said: “We are thrilled that Abbotsford has been awarded five stars from VisitScotland.

“This is testimony to all who have supported us and to all who have worked on the rejuvenation of this iconic site.

“We see Abbotsford as the jewel in the Scottish Borders crown and we believe it will significantly contribute to the visitor experience and increasing visitor numbers across the region.”

Paula McDonald, VisitScotland’s regional director, said: “VisitScotland’s five-star award recognises world-class products.

“Everyone in the Scottish Borders should be very proud this unique attraction is on their doorstep, ready to welcome the world in 2014 when Scotland hosts key events, including the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup and the Homecoming Scotland events programme.”
