September’s commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden drew praise from Provost David Anderson.
At the Ex-Standard Bearer’s dinner he thanked the members who, he said, had put in a lot of time, hard work and imagination into the various local events.
Silver Jubilee Standard Bearer John Beveridge – now working in Qatar – was particularly praised for organising the Selkirk leg of the Flodden Flag relay ride.
Provost Anderson commented: “I think we can all look back on 2013 with great pride, and a feeling of satisfaction, at a job well done. The whole town embraced the events, and supported them as only true Souters can.”
He went on: “That is now all in the past, and tonight we look forward to the Common Riding of 2014.
“On Friday, Standard Bearer Greg MacDougall will be charged to carry the Royal Burgh Flag around the Marches of our Burgh Lands, to Cast the Colours in our ancient Market Place, and then to return the Flag, unsullied and untarnished.”
And turning to Greg he told him : “Enjoy the experience. I am sure you will make yourself and your family very proud.”
