An award-winning hotel and restaurant near Peebles is to close on Sunday, November 8, at least until Christmas.

Bosses at the Cringletie, situated between Peebles and Eddleston, say that due to extra restrictions extending fro the Scottish Government’s new tier system, they have had to close temporarily and furlough its staff.

Cringletie general manager Will Haegeland said: “Compliance with Covid-19 regulatory and advisory requirements now means that not only are we knowingly not able to take new bookings from the central belt covering Glasgow and Edinburgh, other areas above Scotland’s Tier 2 and all of England, but also we are asked to cancel bookings we already have.

“With absent overseas visitors, virtually all of our guests come from England and the more populous parts of Scotland, so there is not much point in staying open if we can’t welcome any guests.”

Bookings for Cringletie’s popular Christmas/Hogmanay packages are still being taken, on a provisional basis.

A final decision will be taken about the festive season nearer the time.

“We hope to be able to confirm reopening for the festive season,” Mr Haegeland added, “but that will depend on what rules Government announce in due course.”
