Travel warning as snow moves in
Commuters across the central belt are being urged to take care as snow and ice affect travelling conditions.
The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for the Strathclyde, Central, Tayside, Lothian and Borders areas.
Rain is forecast to move east across the country during the morning and is likely to turn to sleet and snow for a time across northern and eastern areas, leading to accumulations of snow in higher areas.
Billy Payne, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "Overnight rain will turn to snow as it travels eastwards and meets colder air.
"It will fall mainly on higher ground, with up to 10cm forecast for the highest points. However, as we go through the day the snow should turn back to rain as temperatures rise, leaving snow falling only on the mountain tops."
Icy patches are also likely where rain falls on to sub-zero surfaces.
The Met Office has advised the public to be aware of the risk of disruption to travel, mainly on higher routes.
Ice caused problems in the south of the country yesterday with a number of road accidents in the Dumfries and Galloway area.
In one incident a van slipped off the road and into St Mary's Loch near Selkirk in the Borders.
The driver escaped unhurt from the vehicle after the incident. The delivery van was later pulled from the loch.
