SELKIRK'S season of woe continued with a heavy defeat to fellow strugglers Melrose in the League Cup, and the Souters are unlikely to get any favours when they travel to play Kelso tomorrow in the Border League.
Missing a host of players once again, including opening bowler Kenny Paterson, Selkirk batted first in last Saturday’s 40-over group game at Philiphaugh.
However, Selkirk were on the back foot from the start of their innings with opener Ewen Robbi
e departing for a duck.
Apart from captain John Everitt (30), no other Selkirk batsman made it into double figures. It was only thanks to wayward Melrose bowling that gifted 25 runs as extras, that the Souters were 72 all out with nearly 20 overs left to bat. Bowling for Melrose, Prabhakar led with 4 for 28.
Melrose overtook Selkirk’s total in just 19 overs. Pick of the Selkirk bowlers was Greg Fenton with 2 for 11.
However, there was better news last Sunday when Selkirk’s 2nds defeated Peebles County by three wickets in a friendly at Philiphaugh – with veteran Ronnie Dumma dusting off his whites to play a starring role.
Peebles made 150 for 8 from their 40 overs, with Scott Caddick top-scoring with 59. Selkirk’s J Reid took 2 for 14.
The Souters suffered a few scary moments in reply, but Darren Fenton (40) and Dumma’s innings of 37 not out meant Selkirk claimed victory with nearly 10 overs remaining.
Selkirk 2nds return to Reserve League action this Sunday when they host St Boswells at Philiphaugh.
