Selkirk's defence of their sevens crown took an early knock when Kelso delighted the home crowd with a memorable victory in the Wolseley UK Build Center Kelso Sevens tournament at Poynder Park on Saturday.
In the first round, tries from Fraser Harkness, Scott Hendrie (2), Lee Jones (2) and Eddie Gauche (2), with four conversions by Hendrie, helped seal a 45-0 win over Border League newcomers Haddington.
In their second-round clash with Melrose, another two scores from Harkness and tries from Ryan Crockatt and Gavin Tait gave the Souters a comfortable victory.
The semi-final saw Selkirk battle it out in a fast-paced and physical game against Hawick that was evenly matched until late in the game when the Philiphaugh men ran away with the tie.
The only shadows over an otherwise fantastic match were a early brawl on the halfway line as Keith Davies trotted over the line to score Hawick's first and injuries to Gavin Tait and Scott Hendrie, who is expected to be out for the next month with a hamstring injury. Neil Darling, Gauche (2), Michael McVie all got on the scoresheet to secure the win.
It was an entertaining and hard-fought final that saw Kelso come from behind to win with a late try.
Selkirk took an early lead through Darling and Harkness before Sean Common scored a converted try, taking it to 7-10 at the break.
In the second half, Darren Gillespie combined well with Mee Kaa Eel Hartley to score, Common converting, but Selkirk came back with a second from Darling.
In the final quarter, Common chipped an insightful cross-field ball, which Hartley picked up to score on the right. With additional points from Common this gave the home side a 21-15, which they managed to hold onto.
Speaking afterwards, coach Michael Jaffray told The Wee Paper: "I'm pleased with the way they played today. They're disappointed that they made a few errors in the final, but they've just got to learn from that. They're a good squad and they'll bounce back.
"The positives to take away are things like the teamwork today and I think the guys are fit. They played at quite a good intensity at times. In the ties against Melrose and Hawick what won it was our defence – they worked really hard for each other and supported each other in defence."
Fraser Harkness added: "We had a good tournament and the boys put a hundred percent in and you can't ask for more than that. I think it came down to Kelso being at home. When you play at home you always get that extra 10 or 20 per cent over the visiting teams but Kelso played really well and deserved their win."
Selkirk: N. Darling, R. Crockatt, E. Gauche, F. Harkness, G. Craig, S. Hendrie (N. Renwick), L. Jones, R. Aglen, R. Nixon and M. McVie.
