A LILLIESLEAF air cadet has been awarded the coveted Corps Blue for Athletics after taking part in the annual Air Training Corps v Midland Counties invitation athletics meeting at the Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering in Cranwell on Saturday.
F/Sgt Hannah Wielbo of the 2180 (Galashiels) Squadron was one of just two cadets from the Edinburgh and South Scotland Wing to be invited to join the Corps Athletics team for the event and, in very wet and blustery conditions, competed in both the shot and javelin competitions.
The team of 77 young athletes, drawn from across all regions in the corps, was matched against the best young athletes from a variety of Midlands athletics clubs, including Dudley and Stourbridge Harriers AC, Shropshire AAC, and Tamworth AC.
The 17-year-old, who was Corps junior women's shot champion in 2007 and was this year crowned Scottish and Northern Irish regional champion, finished fifth in the shot competition at the weekend and was also invited to compete in the javelin, in which she was placed sixth.
The young Borderer and former Selkirk High School pupil won her first Corps Blue at the same meet in 2007. Next month, she moves to St Andrews where she plans to study French, Italian and management at the town's university.
She was joined at the event by 15-year-old Cpl Angus Stanners from Langlee who finished third in the under-15 boys' 800m.
