Holywood dream is shattered by well-drilled Irish
PRIMARY seven Rhinos went 'on the rampage' to Belfast recently.
The boys had been invited to take part in the Connswater Tournament by Holywood RFC.
The party of 16 players and three coaches headed for the ferry at Stranraer.
On arrival, the boys were drawn against the hosts, Randalstown and Ballynahinch in pool one. The first game proved difficult for the boys but they managed to emerge 2-1 winners.
The second game of the tournament against Holywood was a different affair. The hosts were well-drilled and managed to score three unanswered tries.
The third pool match gave Selkirk a route to the semi-finals. The boys demonstrated a good grasp of the new rules and used their wide game to great effect in scoring four tries.
Their semi-final opponents, Ards, were the winners of pool two. Selkirk were 1-0 down at half-time, but playing well. They were unlucky to go 2-0 down after the restart. However, they did not give up, and a fantastic break out of defence brought the score back to 2-1. Despite a sustained attack on the Ards line, Selkirk ran out of luck and time.
Holywood went on to beat Ards in extra time in the final. Thanks go to the fundraising efforts prior to the tour, the coaches for organisation on tour, the travelling support and the boys themselves.
This Sunday, the Bannerman Burke Selkirk Mini-Rugby tournament, sponsored by local solicitors Bannerman Burke, takes place at Philiphaugh. Andrew Dickson sponsors the winners' medals.
Kick-off is at 11am, and in addition to Selkirk Rhinos, the invited teams include Gala, Melrose, Langholm and Watsonians.
z Last week's P4 Rhinos report on the successful Gala tournament stated Rory Dempster scored the winning try. In fact, it was Tom Elliot.
