Lothian denies plot to abandon ship after titanic battle
AFTER hitting a second-half iceberg on Saturday, Selkirk boss Fraser Lothian denied rumours that he was about to jump ship.
Gossip around East of Scotland circles in the past few weeks has centred around Lothian moving to Gala Fairydean next season.
But he told The Wee Paper that he had not talked to any other club and was putting all his efforts into helping the Souters stave off demotion.
He said: "I have not been approached by any team, so I don't know where they are coming from.
"I am here with Selkirk till the end of the season then we will see what happens.
"I am here to fight with the players until the last game. We have a cup final to look forward to as well, so I am not interested in any other club. Rumours are rumours and they've been around for years."
After an exhausting four matches in eight days, Selkirk are somehow still in control of their own destiny.
What they can't control, however, is the insane scheduling of the East of Scotland League.
Lothian took a blast at the league secretary, John Greenhorn.
He said: "I think the league secretary needs to take a look at himself.
To give us four games in a week and then not another game for 10 days is absolutely ridiculous.
"We are not happy with the situation. It has cost us today. To play Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday and the Saturday again, for a semi-pro team, is a hard stint.
"But the players will keep fighting and we will have to see what they can come up with."
They take a well-earned rest this weekend, but know they have a tortuous task ahead of them.
They play Preston Athletic at home, and travel to Annan and Dalbeattie.
Win them all and they will edge ahead of Coldstream, who have played all their games. Drop any points and they'll be playing First Division football next season.
Out of the four matches they played last week, they won the first, drew the second, were pipped in the third and were completely thumped by City on Saturday. Tiredness was certainly an issue, as was injuries.
And they picked up some more before Saturday's nightmare was over.
It started off as a dream.
Craig Lothian and Andrew Szczesniak grabbed two goals from the three chances the team had, despite being under extreme pressure, and the Souters went in at the break two up.
But four Robbie Ross strikes and another from Ross Guthrie put paid to any ideas Selkirk may have had of toppling the fourth-placed team in the league.
