HERIOT'S have been a bit of an unknown quantity this season.
They have won two from their five games so far, but have picked up a losing bonus point from the other three games.
It certainly won't be easy for the Souters tomorrow and their ability to play for the full 80 minutes will be tested to the limit b
y the Nails.
Since joining Kevin Barrie as assistant coach this season, Michael Jaffray has experienced a baptism of fire, quite appropriate considering his occupation as a firefighter, and he is certainly hoping his team can set Goldenacre alight tomorrow.
He told The Wee Paper: "Both myself and the team haven't known what to expect at any of our games so far and it hasn't done us any harm.
"If someone had told me at the start of the season that we would win our first four games out of five, I probably would have just said 'aye right!'
"I think the trick is just to concentrate on the game in hand and that is what we have been doing.
"It will get harder as teams improve on their match fitness and the weather changes, but hopefully we can handle all this as it comes and continue with our good style of rugby and winning performances."
One player who is kicking keen to return to the fray is prop Alan McDowall, who returned home to the Borders last week following an extended vacation with fiancée Emma.
Looking to make up some valuable game time, McDowall, who continued training even when he was on holiday, joined the A side last Friday night for their league match against Hawick 2nds.
McDowall said: "I'm fairly confident it won't be too long until I'm back to optimum fitness.
"It was good getting away for a longer holiday break than normal, and in any case the boys seem to have been doing pretty well without me."
This is McDowall's third season at Philiphaugh, and to date the former Earlston vice-captain has clocked up 53 senior appearances at the club.
"I'm really enjoying my rugby with Selkirk," added McDowall, "and they're a great bunch of players to be around. I experienced Premier One rugby when I was with Melrose, and discovered there's a far greater physicality about the game at this level.
"I'm excited about the season ahead, and with so many props at the club right now there's going to be a lot of competition for places, which has to be a good thing."
Meanwhile, Eddie Gauche (ribs) and David Cassidy (knee) will undergo fitness checks this week to see if they are able to return to the fray for tomorrow's match, while pro-player Sean Crombie will be unavailable due to commitments with Edinburgh Rugby.
