Thistle do nicely at Philiphaugh as Souters lose final
SELKIRK Youth Club just missed out on winning their own sevens last weekend when they were beaten by a spirited Jed-Thistle in the final.
A large crowd turned out at Philiphaugh on Saturday for the penultimate round of the semi-junior sevens series during which, despite being beaten in the semi-finals, Hawick Wanderers secured enough points to secure the overall title.
On Saturday, however, the day belonged to the Riverside outfit, who beat Haddington, Hawick PSA and Hawick Wanderers and ultimately the hosts to win their first tournament of the season.
Jed have only been through the first round once this year and the Teries had put them out of three previous tournaments. But on Saturday, the young Thistles, coached by former Jed sevens specialist Kevin Amos, rose to the challenge.
Youth Club demolished Ross High Colts by 62-0 in the first round, but it took some hard work to beat Tynedale 12-5 in the second. Selkirk then went on to oust Peebles Colts 31-14.
In the final, Jed started like an express train and were 10 points ahead from two tries before the hosts had put anything on the scoreboard.
Youth Club did get back in the action, but only momentarily, as Thistle stung again and added another try between the posts.
Another three scores in the second half, two converted, were just too much for Selkirk, who did strive to make a game of it and added two touchdowns of their own one of them goaled. But it was just not enough as Jed were worthy winners at 36-19.
Thistle host the last of the semi-junior sevens events on Saturday at Riverside Park, where the young Souters meet Musselburgh Colts in the fifth tie of the opening round, which kicks-off at 1.30pm.
