SELKIRK Rhinos put up a tremendous showing at the Mini Maroons tournament at Netherdale on Sunday, with the P4 team lifting their section's trophy.
They started the day by beating Duns 5-1, giving them the confidence to go on to beat a plucky Linlithgow side 4-2. The boys were on a roll and ran in a further five tries to beat Gala Maroons 5-1.

This put Selkirk into the semi-finals against Kirkcaldy. A clash of strips saw Selkirk change into the Melrose colours, but luckily this did not affect their game, and after a slow start they went on to win 3-0. This set up a final with local rivals Melrose.

Both teams swapped tries until they were level at 3-3, Rory Dempster, Fraser Easson and Tom Elliot scoring for the Rhinos.

With time running out and extra time looming, Dempster danced through the Melrose defence and dived over the line as the hooter sounded.

The Rhinos' P5 team started with a 2-2 draw against Linthgow, who had opened the scoring after a crunching tackle on Ciaran Blair. Tom Manson-Stubbs scored the equalising try before Linlithgow took the lead again. Manson-Stubbs scored again to seal a draw.

In Selkirk's next game against Duns, Mark Rutter scored twice and Josh Thomson once to claim a 3-0 victory for the Rhinos.

Against host club Gala, Rory Hamilton opened the scoring for the P5s, followed by a try from Josh Thomson.

Sam Coltherd touched down the third score of the game between the posts, before Rutter got his hat-trick for the afternoon to seal an impressive 4-0 win.

The try-count difference saw Selkirk go into the semi-final at the top of their pool, where they were defeated 4-0 by a strong Kelso side.

The whole Selkirk P5 team played some of their best rugby of the season.

Caitlin Cottrell, Alex Beveridge, Ciaran Blair and Jack Norgate all contributed greatly, with good passing and tackling to aid their team members who scored the tries.

P5 Rhinos: A. Beveridge, C. Blair, S. Coltherd, C. Cottrell, R. Hamilton, T. Manson-Stubbs, J. Norgate, M. Rutter & J. Thomson.
