Jed-Thistle 21
Semi-Junior League
LITTLE separates the top five teams teams in the Scottish Borders Semi-Junior League and if Selkirk Youth Club have their way the chink that has opened up between them and first-place Hawick Wanderers will be s
napped shut again tomorrow.
The Selkirk outfit travel to play Peebles Colts, who are languishing at the bottom end of the table, while the table-toppers go head-to-head with Hawick rivals PSA. Anything could happen, and with still almost half the season to go semi-junior supporters can look forward to one of the most exciting endings to a season for many years.
The Youth Club played Jed-Thistle last weekend and, following a defeat earlier in the season, were keen to redress the balance.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and again the Jed youngsters came out on top despite a reasonably good start when the Youth Club went ahead with a penalty by stand-off Rory Banks.
Some sloppy defending let Jed touch down before increasing the gap with a couple of penalties before half-time to make it 11 points to three.
After the half-time pep talk the Youth Club started keenly but were unable to pressurise the Jed tryline, despite putting in a lot of effort.
Play remained fairly even until about 10 minutes from full-time when Jed split the Youth Club defence to score in the corner. Shortly after some poor tackling from the Youth Club led to another try.
The hosts refused to give up and were rewarded with a consolation try at the end from hard working second row forward Ally Turnbull.
Match sponsors were Andrew Dickson Heating Engineers, and Alan MacDonald, Driving Instructor.
