A win is a must

Borders Fjordhus II 0

Edinburgh University V 1

WITH only four games remaining in their East of Scotland division one campaign, Borders must up the ante if they want to challenge for one of the two promotion spots.

They are currently sitting in fifth place, but with results still to be posted and outstanding fixtures to be played, it’s difficult to tell their true position. Tomorrow they travel to play third-placed Watsonians and a win at Tipperlin is a must.

Last week it was Edinburgh University V who put the pressure on and maintained most of the possession throughout the first half. Borders defence was continuously under pressure, but thankfully Laura McColm in goal was on her toes and prevented the opposition going into the lead.

However, the Borderers did a have a great opportunity to take the lead – a quick-thinking sideline ball from Jennifer Kinsella found Selkirk’s Evonne Jack at the top of the visitors’ circle. But her attempt at goal went straight into the keeper’s pads and was kicked out of the danger zone.

Whatever was said among the Uni players at the break must have worked as they scored within the first five minutes of the second half.

This setback made Borders pick up the pace. Yvonne Rafferty worked tirelessly in midfield and provided some great hits up the park, only for the opposing defence to block at every opportunity.

Borders saw out the game pressing for an equaliser, only for time to run out.

Fjordhus are grateful to George Irvine for umpiring and Annabel Small for her ongoing support.

Squad: L. McColm, S. Stark, N. Charters, S. Logan, L. Philbin, Y. Rafferty, A. Renwick, S. Murphy, E. Jack, J. Kinsella, N. Wealleans.
