ALAN'S SILVER LINING

ARCHERS have been aiming for centuries to get their names associated with the prestigious Selkirk Silver Arrow.

It took Lilliesleaf's Alan Lindsay less than a year.

For the 48-year-old handyman only took up the sport last October, when he joined Ettrick Forest Archers, and last Sunday, at Thirladean, he surprised even himself as he accumulated a score worthy of winning arguably the biggest competition of the year. Alan, who works for the Selkirk-based Borders Care and Repair, told the Wee Paper: "I was just enjoying the day and firing away. I never thought for a minute that I'd be first. I knew my arrows were steadily finding the scoring circles, especially in the second half, but I was surprised to hear my name called."

Alan will now have his name added to the plinth on which the historic trophy stands.

Another archer finding the mark for his first medals was club stalwart Jim Craig. On Sunday he enjoyed one of his best days' shooting, earning the medal for the highest first-half score, as well as winning the best ends shoot-off, and a clout into the bargain.

Club coach Jim Stillie took the award for the second half.

Club secretary Elaine Pearson again took the honours in the ladies' competition, the Philiphaugh Silver Arrow, with another superb display featuring no less than three clouts. Mandy Cowen and Jenna Agate took medals for the first and second rounds while Mandy also took the best ends shoot-off for the ladies.

In the junior competition, Rhuary Horsburgh won his first medal of his archery career with a superb score, which included the first clout of the day.

Lady Paramount Ev Craig made the presentations to the archers, which meant hubby Jim had to kiss her three times.
