Archers give it their best shot

SELKIRK-BASED Ettrick Forest Archers completed their Postal Portsmouth competition last Friday with a fun night at the old Laidlaw and Fairgrieve factory.

The yarn store has been home to the bowmen and women for four months, and they have been delighted with the facility.

The Postal Portsmouth is a British Longbow Society competition and the club pitted its skills against the best in the country. A Portsmouth consists of five dozen arrows at 20 yards. The archers recorded their two best scores every month between November and February and, at the final count, no fewer than three of them had recorded a perfect total of 480 hits. Leading all the way was Colin Cairney, who notched up 112 golds, 34 of them inners, for a score of 3,166.

Selkirk couple Mike and Elaine Pearson made up the perfect threesome. The scores for all archers were up on last year, and the club now awaits word from the BLBS to see how well it has done against the rest of the UK.

Club secretary Elaine Pearson told The Wee Paper: "I'd like to thank the club members for their participation. We are delighted with the success of the Postal Portsmouth this year and although we are a young club, we have shown that we can hold our own against the best in the country.

"We now move our attentions to outdoor shooting on Sunday afternoons at Thirladean and on Wednesday evenings once it gets light enough.

"Several members will also be taking part in BLBS competitions throughout the season, starting with the Spring Forward Clout at Mugdock Country Park at the end of March.

"We are also holding a come-and-try day at Thirladean next Sunday, March 14, from 12.30pm, and everyone is welcome to come along and shoot a few arrows."

Archers also shot in teams of four, and the team with the highest score was Yarrow, which consisted of Colin Cairney, Jimmy Stillie, Kevin Janiak and Joyce Quilietti.
