Athletes ponder poor results as Poynder looms

LOCAL runners get on their marks at Poynder Park on Sunday for the Kelso Border Games.

Selkirk success stories were rather thin on the ground at last week’s Peebles Beltane Games.

In fact there was only one performance of any note – and that came from 51-year-old James Purves (50m) in the one-lap handicap.

The vetran runner was pipped at the post by Keith Redpath (53) of Wishaw, who finished one metre ahead of Purves in 30.06 seconds. Scott Hughson of Edinburgh (12m) was third.

Ian Smith (12m) of Longniddry took the honours in the feature sprint handicap in a time of 11.40 seconds to take the first prize of 1,000.

Peebles results – 110m handicap: 1, I. Smith, Longniddry (12m) 10.40 seconds; 2, I. Barskanmay, Hawick (7.5m); 3, S. Atkin, Grantshouse (7.5m).

110m British Championship: 1, G. Turnbull, Jedburgh, 12.02; 2, C. Smith, Tullibody; 3, S. Hughson, Edinburgh.

One lap handicap: 1, K. Redpath, Wishaw (53m) 30.06; 2, J. Purves (50), Selkirk (60m); 3, S. Hughson, Edinburgh (12m).

800m handicap: 1, C. Welsh, Kelso (-2.5m) 59.64; 2, D. Whiteford, Innerleithen (55m); 3, R. Corbett, Hawick (105m).

1,600m handicap: 1, C. Black, Kelso (85m) 4 minutes 31.33 seconds; 2, A. Corbett, Hawick (175m); 3, D. Hastie, Kelso (-7.5m).

3,200m handicap: 1, J. Thomson, Coaltown (135m) 10.01.32; 2, D. Scott, Hawick (320m); 3, D. Hastie, Kelso (scratch).
