Back-in-action ladies draw positives

Waverley Trinity Inveresk 2

Borders Fjordhus 2

National Ladies Division Two

BORDERS FJORDHUS 1st XI, with their strong Selkirk representation, played their first National Division Two league game since November last weekend.

And, having had little pre-season training due to the adverse weather conditions, the local lasses took many positives from their first game back.

Defensive errors were evident in the early stages of the game with the home side cashing in to score an early goal.

It wasn’t long before the Fjordhus girls warmed to the task, however, with Selkirk High School’s Scotland age grade player Sarah Robertson demonstrating her skills with some impressive passing and linking play. Robertson, along with team-mate Siobhan Murphy, pressurised the home defence to create an opening for Laura Anderson who levelled the scores.

The home side scored a second goal on 20 minutes from breakaway passing play.

But yet again the Borderers reacted well with captain Janet Jack converting a penalty corner with a clean strike on goal.

The second half saw a more cohesive display from the visitors, who retained the majority of ball possession.

Considerable pressure was put on the home defence throughout the second half, producing a number of penalty corner opportunities. However, a winning goal could not be found.

“The remainder of the season looks promising for the Borders Fjordhus 1st XI, who can build on the youth, skill and experience of the team to hopefully overcome the opposition,” said a team spokeswoman.

This weekend both Fjordhus teams are at home with the 1st XI taking on Watsonians, and the 2nds playing Edinburgh CS at Volunteer Park, Hawick.

Borders Fjordhus: G. Bradley; R. Hunniford, P. Bell, J. Jack, D. Fairbairn, A. Small, L. Anderson, Y. Rafferty, K. Cornwall, S. Murphy, C. Powner, N. Whellans, H. Miller.
