Ciaran's in sevens heaven

SELKIRK scrum-half Ciaran Beattie has been selected in the Scotland squad for the special sevens exhibition match at Murrayfield ahead of the Scotland v Argentina clash on November 12, writes Craig Keddie.

And Scotland Sevens coach, Rob Moffat, told The Wee Paper that the former Youth Club talisman has a great chance of also being in the national squad to play in the IRB Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens in December.

Moffat also urged anyone with an interest in the abbreviated version of the game, which Scotland bequeathed to the world more than 100 years ago, to come to Murrayfield and support Beattie and his sevens colleagues.

Moffat said: "This is a chance to see quality sevens against one of the top teams in the world in the shortened version of the game.

"We have travelled all over the world, covering more than 48,000 miles last year alone, but this game gives the players a chance to play at Murrayfield, with everything that means to them."

The Famous Grouse-sponsored Scotland Sevens team, who participated in the full eight-tournament IRB series for the first time last season, have not played in front of a home crowd since the IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens at Murrayfield in 1993.

At last year's IRB Rugby World Cup in Hong Kong, Scotland finished fifth equal and next week's match against Argentina is being billed as a chance for the Scottish rugby community to experience the thrill and enjoyment of international sevens here in Scotland.

"Our objectives are to develop high performance players for Scottish rugby, to build a competitive and successful Scotland team and to promote and encourage participation in rugby. This game provides the ideal opportunity to highlight the core values we have laid down in our business plan.

"To achieve our aims we need to keep developing as we have done consistently over the past four years," added Moffat.

The first tournament for Scotland's sevens this season is the IRB Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens on December 1 and 2, from where the squad head directly to George, South Africa, for the second stop on December 9 and 10.

l Scotland v Argentina (XVs) kicks off at 5.30pm, so the sevens match will be played in two 10 minute periods, with the first kicking off at 5.10pm and the second period following immediately after the final whistle of the XVs game, approximately 7pm.
