Dazzling week of golf on The Hill

A GLORIOUS week of championship golf came to a conclusion on The Hill on Saturday when all the categories were decided.

In the gents’ championship (sponsored by Ettrickside Garage), 11-times previous winner Donald Ballantyne got off to a terrific start to be four-up after the first 18 holes against previous winner Michael McVie. McVie could not overcome this deficit, and was beaten 5-4.

In the semi-finals, Ballantyne defeated Michael Robertson (previous winner), while McVie defeated another up-and-coming youngster, Callum Marshall.

Two former winners, Allison Rutherford and Diane Cassidy, contested the ladies’ championship (sponsored by Halliwells Butchers). After 18 holes of super golf ending all square, it was on the 19th fairway that Rutherford had the shot of the tournament when she holed in two for an eagle and the trophy.

Semi-finalists were Russ Roxburgh and Carol Purves.

The Gents B Championship (sponsored by R G Douglas), ex-captain Ronnie Douglas, getting some of his sponsorship back, overcame newcomer 15-year-old James Bett in a very close final.

Semi-finalists: Les Rutherford and Craig Niven.

Former winner of the ladies’ bronze championship (sponsored by Halliwells Butchers), Anne Allan defeated new member, Marjorie Rae – playing in her first championship – by 4/3 to regain the trophy.

Mitch Thomson (beaten finalist two years ago) defeated Ewan McDougall at the 20th hole in the gents’ C championship final (sponsored by Ettrickside Garage), although McDougall led for most of the way.

Semi-finalist were Adam Hope and Dave Beveridge.

Club secretary Jim Hay was delighted with the way the championship week had gone.

He told The Wee Paper: “Well done to everyone who qualified in all competitions to make it another great golfing week at Selkirk Golf Club.

“Many thanks to everyone who helped, and a big thank you to Gordon (our greenkeeper) and staff for the super condition of the course.”

Alan the Accurate, the club’s golf reporter, will be back on duty next week, as he’s away sunning himself with his good lady in Sardinia.
