Down but not out, regal challenge awaits Souters

EoS PREMIER DIVISION

THEY may have suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of league leaders Spartans last weekend, but spirits remain high as the team prepare for a King Cup clash against local rivals Coldstream at Home Park (2pm kick-off) this weekend.

Although in the First Division, Streamers have been enjoying an excellent season and Premier outfit Selkirk will have a real fight on their hands in their quest to reach the second round.

However, Souters’ midfield ace David Battle is confident his team will go into the game in the right frame of mind.

He told The Wee Paper: “Although we are bottom of the league, we are not downbeat or anything like it.

“A few new faces have been brought into the squad and we are just starting to get to know each other. We are improving with every game and were very unlucky not to get a win over Lothian Thistle the other week and although losing we played well against Spartans last Saturday. On this sort of form we can get a win at Coldstream.”

The Yarrow Park side are minus the suspended Lee Stephen, while Ross McManus is a doubt following an injury picked up during last weekend’s game.

The Souters were on the back foot from the off when playing at Ainslie Park last week.

Omar Kader put away a double within the opening 15 minutes despite some aggressive challenges, one of which saw Lee Stephen rightly given a straight red.

Despite the numbers deficit, Selkirk managed to pull one back midway through the half when Daryl Burdett latched onto a Jamie Gibson cross and headed the ball home.

Only five minutes later, however, Danny O’Donnell drove home a 25-yard shot to restore the two-goal lead.

John Dodds in the Selkirk goal played a blinder once again, although the second half was a tame affair with the hosts playing at a much slower pace with the points in the bag.

Selkirk: J. Dodds, L. Stephen, J. Higginbottom, E. Pritchard, B. Milven, J. Inglis, D. Burdett, Ryan McManus, D. Battle, J. Gibson, Ross McManus. Subs: A. Swailes, W. Mercer.
