Home truths need to be addressed
HOME PARK beckons for Selkirk FC this week at the third time of asking, writes Fiona Scott.
Once again, Mike McKinnon’s outfit look to get themselves through to the second round of the South Challenge Cup with a win over Coldstream.
And, following a dismal showing against amateur side Gala Rovers in a hastily-arranged friendly fixture last week, the Selkirk boss is keen to hit the ground running.
He told The Wee Paper: “It’s really frustrating for us when these games keep getting postponed, but there is not a lot we can do about it, so we just have to try and keep ourselves fit and match-ready as well as we can.
“Everyone has their fingers crossed that the match goes ahead this week. Since getting a good result against Lothian Thistle/Hutchison Vale, it’s been a case of one match on and two off for us, and the players really want to get the chance to prove themselves.
“Coldstream have been playing well and getting some good results, so we will have to be at our best to beat them. I think we are capable of doing this, though”.
In the meantime, McKinnon has been busy adding to his squad. Michael Holness from Peebles Rovers is likely to feature in this week’s game.
“Michael is very quick and strong on the ball and could be in our starting line-up this week,” he added.
The Yarrow Park outfit have Jamie Gibson and Lee Steven suspended.
Desperate to get some game time in, the Souters made the short journey to Gala on Saturday to give their players a run-out against Gala Rovers on the new 3G pitch.
The Rovers won 5-2, Jamie Gibson scoring both Selkirk’s goals during a 15-minute spell midway through the second half.
By then, though, Rovers were five ahead, with Jordan Steele supplying a four-goal blast after Shane Greene’s opener.
“We gave a very disappointing show in the first half and there will have to be a big change in attitude if we are going to do anything against Coldstream,” warned McKinnon.
