McKinnon wants his men to finish the job

Coldstream v Selkirk in the rearranged Kings Cup fixture

Coldstream v Selkirk in the rearranged Kings Cup fixture

A RETURN to East of Scotland Premier Division action will be welcomed by Selkirk footballers this weekend following their disappointing exit from the King Cup last week at the hands of Coldstream, writes Fiona Scott.

After two previous postponements, the Souters slumped out of the competition in the opening round with a 4-1 defeat.

Tomorrow, Stirling University are the guests at Yarrow Park and coach Mickey McKinnon feels victory for his side is long overdue.

“A combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing cost us last week. We know we can play better than that and will have to do so against Stirling.”

Last week Selkirk missed a series of opportunities and watched Streamers striker John Crawford score four goals at the other end, taking his tally to an incredible 34 for the season.

The only plus point for McKinnon’s men was Michael Holness netting on his Selkirk debut, but even he missed a penalty in the closing stages.

Meanwhile, everyone at the club was united this week in sending good wishes to former Selkirk striker Shaun Hardie who remains in hospital after a horrific injury – his leg is broken in three places.

The 26-year-old Gala Rovers player was due to be operated on for a second time on Wednesday at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary after sustaining the breaks in a tackle with Leithen Rovers’ Tosh Fleming during Saturday’s Border Amateur League Division A match on Netherdale’s 3G pitch.

Rovers co-manager Craig Lowrie said: “Shaun has been overwhelmed with the support he has received on the club’s Facebook page and wishes to thank everyone for their messages.”
