​Rain stops play for Borders amateur footballers but three league matches and one cup tie go ahead

Three Scottish Amateur Cup first-round ties featuring teams from the region were called off too, Hawick United being the only Borderers in action in the competition, winning 2-1 at West Lothian’s Blackburn United.

Ross Scott and Nathan Gillie scored for Hawick to secure progress to the cup’s second round.

The weekend’s postponed first-round fixtures have been rescheduled for this coming Saturday, with kick-off at 2pm.

Langlee Amateurs and Gala Hotspur’s planned home ties versus Hawick Legion and Tweedmouth Amateurs respectively were postponed, as was Earlston Rhymers’ scheduled away game against Stenhousemuir’s under-19s.

Only two A division matches were due to be played at the weekend, Duns Amateurs hosting Newtown and Chirnside United at home to Langholm Legion, and both fell victim to the weather.

Two B division fixtures were washed out as well, Leithen Rovers hosting Lauder and St Boswells at home to Coldstream Amateurs, but three went ahead, yielding 26 goals between them.

They were a 9-4 victory for Jed Legion at Kelso Thistle and home defeats for Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs and Ancrum, by 4-2 versus Eyemouth United Amateurs and 5-2 against Berwick’s Highfields United respectively.

Jed’s win, only their second in nine matches so far this season, lifts them off the foot of the table, with Selkirk Victoria taking their place. They’re now second from bottom, level on seven points with the two teams immediately above them, Coldstream and Gala Hotspur, but having played one game more than the former and two more than the latter.

Jamie Swailes and William Hogg both scored hat-tricks for the Jedburgh team, with Samuel Hadwin adding a double and Josh Laing a further goal.

Their hosts at Kelso’s Woodside Park also came up with a hat-trick, put away by Shane Bonnington, and Ewan Hutchison scored their other.

Ancrum, with a dozen points, are seventh in the standings and Fairydean’s ammies, on nine, eighth, both having played eight games.

Sean Clarke and Brodie Irvine scored for Ancrum, with Niall Jones netting four for their Northumbrian visitors and Jayden Jeffrey also on target.

Stefan Kennedy got a hat-trick for Eyemouth at Netherdale and Connor Lough found the back of their hosts’ net too. Fairydean’s scorers were Lee Macrae and Adrian Kulik.

Highfields’ seventh win in ten games moves them up to top spot, level on 21 points with second-placed Leithen Rovers but having played one match more.

Eyemouth are third, on 18 points from eight fixtures, with St Boswells fourth, also on 18 points but having played nine games, and Hawick United fifth, on 16 from nine.

No A division fixtures having been played, the top flight’s standings are unchanged, Duns retaining pole position, on 21 points from eight games, with Langlee second, on 20 from eight, and Greenlaw third, on the same points tally but from ten matches.
