Injured Kieran 'lucky not have lost a leg'
THE STORMERS may be getting into their stride but for flanker Kieran Reid the season is well and truly over.
The 19-year-old has experienced a nightmare ordeal after taking a seemingly harmless hit above his left knee in the game against Kelso A.
He continued playing, thinking it was just a dead leg but a few minutes later the pain became intense and he was forced to leave the field. By half-time Kieran was taken to Borders Genera Hospital for an X-ray but his thigh began to swell up massively.
Kieran told us: “The orthopaedic surgeon took one look and said they would have to operate straight away. I was given morphine for the pain, and went into surgery at around 9.30pm.”
Kieran had ‘compartment syndrome’ – compression of nerves, blood vessels and muscle – which leads to tissue death due to lack of oxygenation.
After two further operations he was allowed home, although has been strictly forbidden to walk for another week yet. He continued: “I’ve been told I’ll be on crutches for at least the next three months, and it’ll take a year for the muscle to return to what it was.”
Despite all this, Kieran is staying positive. “The pain is not too bad now, and I can raise my leg a little higher each day. One of the nurses at the hospital told me I was lucky not to have lost the leg, so things could definitely have been a lot worse.”
Kieran was vice-captain of Selkirk Youth Club before stepping up to Philiphaugh, and this season has made eight appearances for Selkirk A and another eight for the Stormers. His 21-year-old brother Brendon is also a Selkirk rugby player.
