Jim's mood Blackens over player's departure
SELKIRK Football Club chairman Jim Moody returned from his week-long sabbatical last Friday to discover he had not only lost his assistant coach, but one of the club's key players had departed too, writes Fiona Scott.
Following the departure of coach Davie Main, the Yarrow Park outfit were further rocked by the decision of Chris Black to leave – and Moody was further taken aback when the club’s top scorer turned out for Kelso United last Saturday.
He told us: “I was a bit miffed about the whole thing to be honest. Chris was released the previous week, having stated that travelling to and from Kelso was becoming a hassle and that he was going to join Kelso Thistle and play amateur football for a while. The next thing we knew he was playing for United. I’m not very happy about it. We paid a lot of money for him and have got nothing back, but what can I do?”
Moody was slightly calmed by his team’s performance against Heriot-Watt University at Riccarton Campus last Saturday, despite being on the wrong end of the 3-2 scoreline.
The hosts looked lively in the early stages and took the lead in the 14th minute from Iain Fyfe’s accurate low drive from the edge of the area. From a cross by Erik Thomson, Ross Leask’s header struck the underside of the bar before the Watt went two up with a near-post header by Michael Connor from a corner on the left. John Dodds saved well from Dom Samuel’s header and Connor’s shot to prevent a third goal.
Towards half-time, the Souters began to battle back. Alan Jackson shot just over, then when the same player’s drive hit the bar and Michael Romanes hammered the rebound into the net from the edge of the area. The visitors drew level eight minutes after the resumption, Romanes seizing on a clearance to set up Ryan Clapperton for a crisp shot to the corner of the net.
As the sides battled for a winner, Gordon Wilson did well to cut out a Jackson near-post flick from a corner, then Connor’s shot was diverted over the bar.
With around 10 minutes left, James flighted the ball over the Selkirk defence and Jamie Brown took the ball on the half-volley to lob over the head of the advancing Dodds.
Selkirk don’t have a game this weekend.
