Jones all set for his screen test

SELKIRK supporters could be forgiven for performing their best Usain Bolt impression after tomorrow's match with Watsonians in order to get themselves in front of a TV.

Former Philiphaugh favourite Lee Jones makes his competitive debut for Edinburgh in their live televised match at Cardiff Blues, kicking off at 6.30pm.

The 22-year-old has won a starting place for Edinburgh's first Magners League game of the season in front of Mark Robertson and Andrew Turnbull after scoring a brace in a friendly against London Irish last weekend.

Edinburgh coach Rob Moffat said: "Lee deserved a start. He's got a tremendous work ethic, has trained very well and has been a great example for others."

Jones said this week: "It is hard to believe I'm in the Edinburgh team, to be honest."

"Coming through the ranks at Selkirk has got me to where I am, and there are many more like me in the club game with the ability, I believe, to step up and play pro rugby in Scotland. But they have to want it too."

Jones' former teammates face a vital clash with Watsonians at Philiphaugh, but Graham Marshall will be without Scott Hendrie, who is sidelined for around six weeks with a shoulder injury.

With neither team having won a game yet in Premier One, coach Marshall said: "A big game for both teams looking for a win to kickstart the season.

"The players were really disappointed with last week, but we know Watsonians are in the same position and it will be an exciting game."

President Donald Macleod added: "A win against Watsonians is vital for league points.

"We have played some exciting rugby this season, but only in occasional flashes. I'm sure the players will be making every effort to put all their hard training sessions together and produce sustained spells of open running rugby and tries."

Last week's 26-22 defeat at West of Scotland saw Selkirk concede four tries to add to the six lost to Boroughmuir the previous week.

The Souters did grab their first touchdown of the season through Rob Taylor late on, after five penalties from David Cassidy. Despite late pressure, Selkirk could not find a second try to win the game.

Selkirk's game kicks off at 3pm, while Selkirk Stormers host Linlithgow in the East Reserve League Two. Selkirk A, who lost 13-11 at Kelso A last weekend, travel to play Jed-Forest seconds in East Reserve League One.

Edinburgh's match with Cardiff Blues is televised on Welsh channel S4C (Sky channel 134).
