Lindores on a high Down Under

FORMER Selkirk superstar Joyce Lindores has been bowling them over down under on her way to winning the $125,000 Australian Open.

Craving the big stage she graced for almost 20 years, Lindores thrived under the semi-final pressure, comfortably accounting for reigning Queensland state singles champion Lyn Cuthbertson 9-4, 10-5.

From there the 65-year-old stepped up to the mark in the final against local favourite Julie Keegan.

Keegan looked set to reproduce the form that helped sweep her in to the decider when she stormed to a 6-1 lead after three ends. But Lindores had other ideas and took control of the match by winning the set 10-6 and the second 11-2 in just seven ends.

Lindores, who represented Scotland in five Commonwealth Games during an illustrious career, relished her return to the big stage.

“It’s a great thing for me at my age to come here and win this,” she said. “I was in a few tricky messes over the journey, but played well from there and came back.”

Having walked away from international bowls and her native Selkirk following her pairs silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, she admits she still yearns for the thrill of top-level competition. “I have missed the big matches,” she added.
