Millar aiming to star in Bad Boy role
SELKIRK Thai boxer Ross Millar will be one of two Borders fighters on the card for a prestigious tournament in Haddington on Sunday, writes Mark Entwistle.
Ross fights under Galashiels-based instructor Toby Douglas and will be joined by Kevin Rutherford from Tweedbank.
Properly called Muay Thai, the martial art they practise uses foot, knee, hand and elbow techniques.
Ross will also be heading to the Bad Boy Gym in Glasgow at the end of the month to fight for a title in Scotland’s biggest amateur event. Although being an amateur event means the fighters will wear body protection, the tournament is being conducted under full Thai rules which permit the use of knees and elbows to the head of an opponent.
“It should be a good fight and I think Ross will do well. He’s really coming on as a fighter,” Toby told The Wee Paper this week.
Toby is also hoping his fighters will get the chance to shine on a more local stage in May, with plans to repeat the hugely-successful inaugural Muay Thai event staged in Galashiels last year.
It all enhances Toby’s growing reputation as an instructor, which was also helped recently by the Scottish team’s 10-1 series win against Ireland in the Celtic Cup event in Cork.
Second last on the card, Toby faced off against Irish champion Dave Leahy in the 70kg class in what was only his fourth professional fight.
“He was hammering me in the clinches in the first round, so after that I opted to stay back and use my boxing skills and that paid dividends,” Toby said this week. “By the end of the bout, I was unmarked with a great win under my belt. I was really chuffed to have helped the Scottish team to an overall win and very honoured to have been invited to be part of the team in the first place.”
