SELKIRK handler Stuart Coltherd celebrated at Kelso Racecourse when Tartan Snow recorded his fifth win over fences on Wednesday.

This latest victory for the local yard comes on the tail of a string of recent wins for the Midlem-based trainer. Surprise Vendor was first at Kelso’s previous meeting, while Overlady clinched pole position at Ayr on January 30.

Coltherd told The Wee Paper: “Things are going well at the moment and the horses seem to be hitting form.

“It was a toss-up this week whether to send Tartan Snow to Ayr on Tuesday or Kelso on Wednesday – and it turns out we made the right choice. We backed our local course and it paid dividends. He seems to like Kelso and so do we.”

Seventeen-year-old Jamie Hamilton, son of the course’s clerk of the scales, Michael Hamilton, gave Tartan Snow a great ride midweek to head the rest of the field in the Amateur Jockeys’ Association Amateur Riders event, marking a victorious handicap chase debut into the bargain.

The 25-1 chance powered home nine lengths clear of the Jim Goldie-trained Circus Clown, with Badger Foot from Lucinda Russell’s Arlary House stable in third.

Jamie has been gaining valuable experience at Richard Fahey’s Malton stable in North Yorkshire. He has previously ridden four times on the Flat, for Fahey and South Lanarkshire trainer Linda Perratt, and also rode in a hunter chase last spring.

The victorious jockey gained high praise from the winning trainer who commented: “Full marks to Jamie, he gave him a cracking ride and did everything I told him.”

The 12-year-old gelding is owned by the Whitemoss Racing Syndicate, which includes Coltherd’s uncle, George, and Selkirk’s Martin Scott within its ranks.

Coltherd’s victory was one of three to come from local trainers at Wednesday’s meeting.

Hawick’s Alison Hamilton saw Bow School record his first win over hurdles in the colours of her husband, Gavin, while Doc Row, trained at Galashiels by Katie Scott, was partnered to victory by Jedburgh jockey Gillon Crow in the Lyntoun Private Hire open hunter chase.

Lambourn trainer Nicky Henderson, having opted not to run Cheltenham contender Binocular in the feature race, brought three horses to the Borders track, and returned to Berkshire with a trio winners, including Simonsig in the main BetVictor Morebattle Hurdle race.

The next outing for the Coltherd yard is at Carlisle on Monday where Overlady is likely to feature in the three-mile, two-furlong Cumberland Show Handicap Chase at 3.40pm.
