SELKIRK’S very own hockey international, Sarah Robertson, returned to the Royal Burgh last weekend to pick up her first accolade of 2013.

The 19-year-old law student was voted The Wee Paper Sports Personality of the year following her many achievements in 2012, which included gaining her first senior Scotland cap.

Sarah was out in Australia competing for Team GB at the Youth Olympic Festival when the voting took place over Christmas and the New Year, and was surprised and delighted on her return to find out she had been chosen by the people of Selkirk to receive this year’s award.

She told The Wee Paper: “It is a real honour to get this award. Even more so because I am living, studying and training away from home most of the time now, so it is really touching that the people of Selkirk are still thinking about me and keeping track of my progress.

“A lot of my medals and trophies stay at my home in Selkirk as I have no room in my flat in Edinburgh, but these ones are definitely coming back up the road with me.

“I am looking ahead to some fairly intense training now before the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and knowing everyone at home is rooting for me acts as an extra incentive. Thank you all so much.”

Sarah is currently in her second year of her three-year course and is looking at taking a year out, starting from May, to concentrate on her training for Glasgow 2014.
