Souter four are on their marks in New Year glory quest

VETERAN sprinter Craig Douglas will lead the Souter challenge at the 144th New Year Sprint.

The former Selkirk FC chairman starts off from a mark of 23 metres in heat four at Musselburgh Racecourse on Hogmanay as 70 speedsters aim to take the £4,000 first prize.

In the lane beside Douglas will be Selkirk Track and Field’s promising talent Kerr Gerrard (11m), who enjoyed a successful summer season which included victories at the St Andrews and Blackford Highland games.

Hawick’s David Rae (8.75m) and Luke Lowther (16m), of Jedburgh, go in the same race.

In heat two, Craig Bruce, 17, is off from a mark of 16.5m, having won the lap race at Morebattle Games in the summer.

Craig’s dad Colin, who made the final last year, starts from 12.25m in heat eight alongside the Jedburgh trio of Cameron Grieve, Iain Heard and Scott Richardson.

Defending champion Graeme Lister (5.75m) of Kirkcaldy starts in heat six, with Allan Hamilton of Edinburgh AC the back marker at 4m.

The cross-ties and final will take place on New Year’s Day.
