Souters on and off target

SELKIRK Rifle Club’s tumultuous season continued last week with a Scottish League victory – breaking a run of defeats in the Lothian divisions.

The local sharp-shooters returned to Pathhead in the Lothian Shoulder-to-Shoulder League with hopes of halting their recent decline in fortunes, and improved their score from the previous week by 10 points. It wasn’t enough, though, as a rampant home team improved their score, too, winning handsomely. Selkirk have now lost three on the trot and all four reverses have been away matches. Their next encounter also sees them on their travels – at Heriot’s in three weeks’ time.

As a result, Pathhead A take over from Balerno at the top of the table – equal on points, but with a better aggregate.

Top scorers for the Souters were Ian Burton and Bill Vaughan on 191s – but the visitors were on the receiving end of an 8-0 thumping in the matchplay.

But in the Scottish League’s first division, the Borderers overcame Bearsden and District A, moving them to within two points of leaders Larbert. Bill Vaughan top-scored for Selkirk with 100.

Lothian League:

Division One: Selkirk A were defeated by Balerno and Currie A by 397-390, top scorer for Selkirk was Eric Brown with 100.

Division Two: Selkirk B were defeated by Orkney by 377-374, top scorer for Selkirk was Keith Nixon with 99.

Division Four: Selkirk C were defeated by Edinburgh Civil Service by 369-360, top scorer for Selkirk was Robert Murray with 93.

In the club competitions Kevin Edward won the February Medal and Keith Nixon took the Tinline Cup with an excellent first card of 100.

So far as the junior section was concerned, Darren Brown completed a double by lifting the monthly medal and MacDougall Cup with first cards of 98 and 99. Darren has also been awarded a grant from Ettrick and Lauderdale Sports Council to assist in his progression with the Scotland under-21 squad.

This year a few members have taken up the air rifle, and Eric Brown, in his first national postal competition run by the NSRA, came first in C class set one and fifth in set two, giving him an overall second in the aggregate.

Eric Brown and Bill Vaughan competed in the Grand Prix at Carlisle last weekend, clinching second and third places respectively in their class.
