Super Cupar showing from Selkirk runners

THREE Selkirk Track and Field runners braved freezing conditions to claim honours at a major cross-country championship.

Zaynah Aziz, John McLean and Jack Stanners won five medals between them at the East District Cross Country event at Cupar, Fife, last Saturday. On a frozen rutted course of hay stubble and tractor tracks, Aziz took an individual silver in the girls’ under-13 race over the 3.2km.

Representing the Peebles-based Moorfoot club, her performance, combined with team-mates Fiona Grant (ninth) and Mairi Wallace (12th), meant the trio grabbed a team silver.

McLean and Stanners also represented the Moorfoot Club, and were involved in almighty battle with team-mate Jacob Adkin of Peebles in the under-17 men’s 6.4km race.

Adkin turned an eight-metre advantage over McLean into an eight-metre deficit by going briefly off-course with 1km to go and couldn’t quite get back to the Selkirk High pupil, who held on well to take the bronze.

Stanners wasn’t far behind in fifth in what was a dominant team gold for the Moorfoot boys.

Moorfoot and Gala Harriers runners both had a good day at Cupar, with nine medals in total picked up by Borders athletes.
