RETURNEES BOOST BROWNLEE FOR VISIT OF ALBION ROVERS
ALBION Rovers may not have the glamour of Hibs or Rangers who Selkirk are due to play in coming weeks, but the Coatbridge side present another tough examination of the Souters tomorrow afternoon.
The Third Division outfit secured a creditable 2-2 draw with First Division Greenock Morton last Saturday, while at the same time Paul Brownlee's team were thumped 7-1 by East Fife.
However, manager Brownlee is expecting a number of his 25-man squad to return to action this weekend, including a debut for former Berwick Rangers Reserves and Coldstream utility player Jason Inglis.
He told The Wee Paper: "There will be a few back for the game against Albion Rovers and I feel as games move into the second half this season we can strengthen our team by bringing quality subs on rather than keep playing with tired legs.
"We have a lot of quality to come back into our squad so it is looking good for the new season."
It was not the most ideal start to the season for Brownlee against East Fife at Yarrow Park, who are managed by ex-Scotland striker Stevie Crawford.
Selkirk did have the first shot on target of the game through new signing Des Sutherland - one of five former Gala Fairydean players in the starting line-up - but it was all downhill from there for the homesters.
Former Rangers right back Scott Durie, whose dad Gordon was watching on, opened his East Fife account with a powerful strike on 10 minutes.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 34th minute through trialist Gary Carrol and Bobby Linn notched a third seconds before half-time.
Linn was the class act on show - although Sutherland and Shaun Hardie looked like they may form a promising partnership - and the ex-Dundee winger added his second and the Methil club's fourth goal with a superb 20-yard shot on 58 minutes
Sutherland struck the East Fife crossbar before trialist Lee Bryce made it 5-0.
But Callum Hope marked his Selkirk debut after his close season move from Hawick Legion with a consolation goal on 73 minutes.
However, further strikes from Lloyd Young and Linn, who completed his hat-trick, ensured the Souters have plenty to think about ahead of games against Albion Rovers, Hibs (July 26), Rangers (July 28) and Hamilton Accies (August 9) in the build- up to the new season.
Brownlee told us: "It was a worthwhile work out.
"We had a few guys missing due to injuries and holidays which was a pity because I wanted to play two strong teams in both halves.
"We have a busy pre-season and that is why we have a big squad to get them all involved in the games and give them game time."
Tomorrow's friendly kicks off at Yarrow Park at 3pm.
