Knox fires up the Cougars

JUNIOR rugby players managed to beat the big freeze last weekend for Selkirk Cougars to put in a scorching performance against Melrose under-16s at The Glebe on Sunday.

This 13-5 victory saw them progress to face Marr under-16s in the National U16 Cup.

A determined Selkirk applied a steady and disciplined defence on a physically-larger opposition from the off.

A Darren Knox penalty triggered the scoring and after soaking up some immense pressure from the Melrose men, the Souters regained control. Superb soccer skills from Jack Elliot continued all the way to the line where he touched down to put his team 8-0 ahead. Knox converted.

The second half brought much of the same from Selkirk who increased their lead with another Knox penalty.

Thereafter, Melrose turned up the heat, but the Cougars refused to concede and their strong rearguard display continued right up to injury time when their opponents managed to squeeze in at the corner with a well-worked try.

But it was too little, too late, and Selkirk’s players and supporters celebrated moments later when the final whistle sounded.

Selkirk development officer Iain Paxton commented: “This was a fantastic display by the Cougars, with a total squad commitment and contribution to the victory.”

Tomorrow sees Selkirk’s senior XV out for revenge against Kelso at Philiphaugh (3pm) in Premier C, while Selkirk A play Dalziel, also at home (2.30pm). The Stormers travel to face Jed 2nds at Riverside Park (3pm).
