LEE’S NEW SELKIRK LINKS

WHAT’S neatly-packed, spicy and packs a bit of a punch?

Why, it’s ‘Juicy Jones’ of course – the Selkirk sausage produced in honour of our very own Murrayfield banger Lee, who played out of his skin in last Saturday’s Calcutta Cup match.

Despite the devastating defeat suffered by the Scotland rugby team when playing the Auld Enemy, winger Lee Jones proved himself a winner on the international stage.

His first cap may have offered him little opportunity or space to run with the ball, but the 23-year-old took some big hits throughout the game and returned them in kind.

He certainly impressed coach Andy Robinson who has retained him in the side for Sunday’s clash against Wales. And Selkirk folk, including Jones’ mum Maureen, got right behind their international link by queuing up to purchase the meaty treat this week.

The master of this culinary creation is Alan Scott of Waters the butchers, who concocted the recipe for success prior to Saturday’s match.

He told The Wee Paper: “Lee was a message boy here when he was 14/15 years old.

“He was a great wee worker then and still is when he’s on the rugby field. We also sponsor his steaks and chicken so folk can rest assured he is getting the best of food from his home town.

“I was lying in my bed last Saturday morning and I suddenly thought wouldn’t it be nice just to do something for Lee Jones in Selkirk.

“I then started to put together some recipes and came over to the shop straight away to cook some up for customers to try.

“Needless to say they loved them and within about 20 minutes the shop was packed with everyone wanting the Lee Jones sausages.

“This is a special recipe made with lots of different spices, totally unlike your average pork sausage.

“Everyone is behind Lee and I must say about the Selkirk people that if there is anything like this they will try it and get right behind it.

“It is absolutely wonderful. We should maybe send some up for the team to give them a wee boost ahead of this week’s game.”

The game against Wales in Cardiff this weekend kicks off at 3pm.
