Quins not mighty enough for Selkirk

SEMI-JUNIOR LEAGUE

FOLLOWING the excitement of the previous week’s narrow victory over title rivals Gala Wanderers, Selkirk Youth Club managed to ground themselves last Saturday to clock up 35 points without reply.

A lively start by the hosts put Kelso Quins on the back foot and, when the visitors won possession from a scrum near their own posts, the young Souters charged down the kick-out and livewire flanker Scott McClymont reacted quickly to touch down, with Josh Welsh slotting the conversion.

From the kick-off, Quins worked their way well into the Youth Club half and only some determined defending by the hosts kept them away from the try line.

Midway through the half, Welsh showed his strength by shrugging of a number of tackles to burst through to score and convert to double the tally. Kelso never gave up and caused the Youth Club a lot of problems.

Both teams were making errors, but this added further excitement for the large crowd.

Just before the half-time whistle, Callum McEwan was yellow-carded by the referee which meant Selkirk would have to spend 10 minutes of the second half without their influential stand-off.

Despite being a man down, however, they still managed to put their visitors under pressure and scrum-half Kyle Stillie wriggled over to score, Welsh converting.

Play proceeded to swing from end to end with Kelso being unlucky on a number of occasions not to get over the try line.

Youth Club coaches had to make some changes due to injuries to second row Jack Houston and flanker Adam Nichol. Jordan Lunt and Bruce Riddell were the more than suitable replacements and with about 15 minutes remaining, the try of the day came when the home side took control in their own half and a quick break by McEwan, via Welsh and Lewis MacLennan to McEwan again, set up supporting full back Kieran Monks to slice Kelso wide open and score. Again, Welsh converted.

The final try came from a cheeky chip over the advancing Quins backs by McEwan, and with a good bounce of the ball the same player had an easy task of touching down between the posts, making it easy for Welsh to get his fifth conversion of the day.

Credit must be given to Kelso for making this a competitive game, but they did not have the same cutting edge.

Youth Club wish to thank sponsors ERH Joinery and Town Arms.

The next game is at home this Saturday, against Jed Thistle, kick off 2pm.
