SELKIRK HIGH SCHOOL rugby stars of the future had the exciting opportunity to train with current day heroes on Monday afternoon.

After having to transfer from the frozen pitches at Philiphaugh to the new 3G pitch at Gala Fairydean, 36 S1 and S2 pupils received learning and developing skills from a sizeable group of Edinburgh Rugby professionals, including Scottish internationalists Chris Paterson, Kyle Traynor and Alan MacDonald as well as the possible future star Tim Visser and the popular Fijian internationalist number 8 Netani Talei.

The afternoon was organised for the young Selkirk players in order to concentrate on developing and improving key national skill themes of the hand catch, ball presentation, offloading and tackling.

So, under the watchful eyes and guidance of the Edinburgh players, the lads were put through their paces.

Selkirk RFC development officer Iain Paxton travelled with the youngsters and was extremely satisfied with the day’s outcome.

He told The Wee Paper: “It was extremely encouraging to see the huge enthusiasm from the Selkirk boys, but also the eagerness to listen and learn from the many words of advice and guidance offered from the pros.

“The lads really enjoyed the experience, with everyone benefiting and appreciating the increased awareness of the need to work on the various skills to improve their game, but also understanding and gaining confidence to bring these skills into their game performance.”

At the end of the session, the players were congratulated on their efforts by the Edinburgh coaching staff and were then given the opportunity to collect autographs.

The Selkirk School of Rugby has made steady progress forward since its start in early November and the energy, application and enthusiasm shown by the boys augurs well for the future.
