Sinking feeling for the Souters

WELLINGTON boots may have been more appropriate footwear for the Selkirk cricket team as they waded to the wicket at The Castleholm last weekend.

They were definitely up the creek without a paddle and ducks were the order of the day as the hosts launched a bowling deluge which saw the soggy Souters all out for only 25 runs. And then, following a shaky start, Langholm passed the visitors' total to triumph by six wickets.

On winning the toss, home skipper Colin Turk opted to put Selkirk in to bat - and openers Greg Fenton (2) and Thomas Penman (1) were soon back in the pavilion with the score 6 for 2.

Both Kenny Patterson (4) and Darren Fenton, out for a duck, were caught and bowled by Duncan Elliott.

Jordan Reid (4) and Rory Banks moved the score to 19, but surprisingly tried to run a two when there was little hope, and the former was run out.

Graham Park joined the home bowling attack and from his first delivery dismissed Banks (9), leaving Selkirk on 22 for 6. Elliott secured his fourth wicket when Ronald Wilkie was caught in the covers by Euan Wilson and Ian Buckley was similarly dismissed by Turk off a Graham Park delivery.

Park also secured the wicket of Ian Gardiner. Alex Massie (3) was then clean bowled by Graham Park and the visitors were all out for 25 in the 14th over.

There appeared to be a mix-up between the home openers and Andrew Bell was run out for a duck.

Gregor Park also departed without getting on the scoresheet when caught by Jordan Reid off Darren Fenton - and Langholm had two wickets down for only one run.

Ewan Wilson (6) was clean bowled by Patterson to make it 13 for 3 and the hosts were finding it a bit of a struggle against some good bowling.

Jack Pool was caught by Wilkie off Greg Fenton and it was now 19 for 4.

Jamie Ashton-Smith (10) and Graham Park (1) were still at the wicket when they passed the Selkirk total to finish on 26 for 4 in the 11th over.
