Souters braced for relegation dogfight
LAST Saturday's defeat at the hands of Heriot's saw Selkirk slip back to third-bottom in Premier One, writes Fiona Scott.
And with Boroughmuir and Watsonians both winning their matches, it means Michael McVie’s men have to win their home game against Watsonians next Saturday if they are to have any chance of climbing out of the relegation zone.
Selkirk president Donald Macleod told The Wee Paper: “Last weekend’s match against Heriot’s (see page 19 for full report) was hugely disappointing. We were playing well and three points down with about 10 minutes to go when Heriot’s pressurised us into making mistakes which gave them three converted tries.”
With no league game this weekend due to the Six Nations, a friendly at North Berwick has been arranged tomorrow (11.30am), thanks to Ken Macaulay of North Berwick co-operating with Selkirk fixture secretary Mary Inglis.
“This will help the boys sharpen things up after the weather has prevented us getting regular games," added Macleod.
The Philiphaugh clubhouse will be open from 1pm tomorrow and MacLeod hopes that players, members and supporters will watch the Italy v Scotland and England v Ireland internationals on the big screen TV.
“The team has enjoyed terrific support at home and away matches, with probably more Selkirk than Heriot’s supporters at Goldenacre last weekend. We will be providing free pies at half-time during the Scotland match as a very small token of appreciation from the club,” he said.
Elsewhere, Selkirk wing Lee Jones returned to the Philiphaugh starting line-up last week following a successful outing for Scotland in the latest IRB Sevens World Series tournaments in New Zealand and Las Vegas.
Although the Scots found life particularly difficult in the Wellington event, where their pool featured Fiji, Australia and Papua New Guinea, the team ended the Las Vegas leg with a hat-trick of victories against Chile, Guyana and Japan to pick up the Shield title.
Jones was a regular starter in the side, scoring a total of seven tries during the tour.
