Stormers on the up
Selkirk Stormers 15
Kelso 2nds 36
STORMERS may still be languishing at the bottom of the Border Farm Supplies Championship table, but their recent performances have seen a steady improvement.
Facing a strong Kelso side at Philiphaugh last weekend, they provided an exciting game for the brave band of Souters who turned out to support the team in arctic temperatures. But with both teams willing to run the ball at every opportunity, the crowd soon warmed up.
The Tweedsiders were first to score 15 minutes into the game, before Selkirk hit a purple patch and bagged two fine tries – the first from Rory Banks after a neat chip over the visitors’ three-quarter line, and the second from man-of-the-match Scott Tough who ran in from the 22-metre line after a scrum pick-up and break from Scott Tomlinson.
Midway through the first half the homesters lost skipper Kieran Reid with a leg injury which required surgery at the BGH, and will keep him out of the game for the rest of the season.
Kelso scored another two touchdowns to make the half-time score 19-10 in the Tweedsiders’ favour.
The visitors upped the tempo after the resumption and racked up another two tries.
However, Selkirk came back into the game with an unconverted try from prop Steven Renwick, who drove over from three metres.
Kelso grabbed another try late on to complete the scoring.
