Storming the castle

members of Selkirk-based Ettrick Forest Archers did themselves proud at the Scottish Clout Championships held at Culzean Castle, near Ayr, last weekend.

Some of the best longbow archers in Britain took part and once again Elaine Pearson was the town's top toxophilite of the day, taking the bronze medal for the best second round score and the Patron's medal for winning the best ends shoot-off by a centimetre.

The ladies' competition was won by Elaine Smith, but the Scottish title was lifted by Betty Wylie of Lockerbie.

In the gents' event, Selkirk's Martin Stillie was top Ettrick Forest scorer - thanks to a superb push in the second round, while the Wee Paper's Kevin Janiak made up for the previous evening's Selkirk pub league bowls fiasco by obtaining the first clout of the day — he was obviously saving himself. However, a mid-competition lapse in form meant that he was beaten to the best ends shoot-off by a countback in scores.

That shoot-off was won in similarly-tight circumstances by Hugh McBrien of the Green Hollow Club. The Scottish title went to McBrien, while Geoff Ingleby, winner of the Ettrick Forest Open Clout, took the overall championship.

Although the male Borderers struggled to get into the main prizes, the majority of the clouts scored on the day were by Selkirk archers.

One of these was hit by Connor Janiak, who was the only junior shooting on the day.
