Youth Club aim to get off the mark
Youth Club host Tynedale Colts tomorrow (2.30pm kick-off) at Victoria Park hoping to claim their first victory of the Semi-Junior League season.
Last weekend saw a youthful Selkirk defeated 21-12 by a much bigger Peebles Colts side.
Youth Club have lost 10 players from last campaign's team - and also had captain Callum McColm (injury) and Elliot Harrison (holiday) missing. But they started reasonably well at Peebles High's small pitch, considering they had not played a pre-season friendly.
Josh Welsh put the visitors 3-0 up with a penalty, but a converted try gave Peebles the lead. Both sides swapped penalties before Welsh put the Souters ahead at half-time with his fourth successful kick.
The hosts took control of the second half and pinned their opponents in their own half.
After seven minutes a pass from scrum half Andrew Tennant was intercepted by Peebles to scamper through to score. Youth Club struggled in the second period to gel, but battled on and Welsh was unlucky when a penalty drifted wide.
Peebles were good at slowing the game down and kicking into corners, preventing Selkirk from breaking into opposing territory, and with 10 minutes remaining the Colts' inside centre slotted over a penalty.
And another penalty for Peebles just before full-time made the points safe.
