Youth Club struggle to tame physical Colts side

In a tough physical match, Tynedale outmuscled an inexperienced Youth Club squad.

Playing at Victoria Park, Colts got off to the best possible start when they scored early after a mix-up in the Youth Club defence.

This spurred the Souters into action and after 15 minutes spent camped in the Tynedale half, fullback Callum McEwan managed to wriggle through to score, with Josh Welsh converting to edge his team ahead.

They continued to work hard and increased their lead when Welsh kicked over a penalty.

The Tynedale pack began to rumble forward into the Youth Club half and, after winning a scrum. their speedy winger accelerated through to score and with a successful conversion Tynedale were back in the lead.

Again, Selkirk worked their way into the Tynedale 22 and a good break by the backs set up debutant winger Thomas Duncan to squeeze over the try line.

Welsh converted to make the score 17-12 at half-time.

The visitors struck early in the second half and touched down in the corner to level the scores, but once again the Youth Club got themselves back in front with another penalty from Welsh, which went over courtesy of the inside of the post.

Selkirk were pressing, but a mixture of wrong decisions and mistakes prevented them from scoring and the big Tynedale forwards began to dominate. They scored yet another try from the wing to get their noses in front, but with eight minutes to go Welsh struck over another penalty.

The home kicker had to be replaced and Tynedale took advantage of the reorganisation and ran through the middle to score between the posts and convert.

This time there was no time left for Youth Club to fight back and the visitors celebrated their victory at the final whistle.

The young Souters showed better commitment and hopefully will manage to get back on track this week when they are at home against Langholm Colts (3pm).
