Zaynah misses Oxton action

LOCAL athletes will be hot-footing it over to Oxton tomorrow when the village hosts its first games for 13 years.

Running in the youths' sprint, Josh Welsh (16m) is still out of the handicaps, as is Nyle Godsmark (8.5m) in the senior sprint. Nyle's twin brother, Ryan, will make his debut in the sprints and has yet to be given a mark. Iain Douglas (30m) is looking for his third win of the season and his dad, Craig (40m), is hoping to stop him as they are in the same 200m heat. James Purves (20m) is also running in the main sprint and has a slight chance of getting through.

Last weekend at St Ronan's Games Selkirk's Jack Stanners added his second triumph on the 2010 Borders circuit.

Coached by David Knox, the promising 13-year-old showed the field a clean pair of heels in the youths' 1600m handicap. Ewan Gillham of Kilbarchan (170m) and Adam Craig of Lauder (65m) gained the other spots.

Andrew Nisbet finished third in the youths' sprint final.

The Knox school had hoped for a double with Jack (110m) going in the 800m at Oxton and 10-year-old Zaynah Aziz, who finished second at Jed, competing in the 1600m, but she's had to go down to London with her family and will miss out.

Knox told The WeePaper that they are hoping Zaynah will pick up a win before the end of the season at Tweedbank or Morebattle.

He added: "We only have the two recognised distance runners with us at Selkirk, but they are pushing each other on and both improving greatly. Both Jack and Zaynah will be going to Glasgow in the winter to compete at national level and I don't think either will be far away from the medals – even though Zaynah is two years younger than some of the girls she will face.

"Andrew Nisbet (33m) is due a win after finishing regularly in the places – and he shouldn't be far away in the 200 metres," he added.
